Department Overview

McDonald’s is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative attorney to serve as Counsel, U.S. Strategic Initiatives, supporting legal analysis and execution across legislative, regulatory, and policy matters.

This role sits at the intersection of law, policy, and business strategy, with a primary focus on reviewing and analyzing legislation, regulatory language, and policy materials, particularly in emerging areas such as data regulation, algorithmic decision-making, and digital engagement frameworks.

Duties

  • Monitor and provide analysis of legislation across multiple areas and jurisdictions, working collaboratively with internal legal teams and government relations, with heavy emphasis on state and local legislation.
  • Create strong partnerships across legal teams on legislative and regulatory trends and developments, including convening conversations and sharing regular updates with legal subject matter experts.
  • Collaborate closely with our Government Relations team to provide legislative analysis on critical business issues.
  • Engage with trade associations, litigation centers and external partners to proactively track and shape the external environment and advance policy interests.
  • Facilitate team organization and project management, including drafting and managing communications on legislative developments and maintaining a database of legislative and policy analysis and advocacy tools.

Qualifications

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working with:
    • Legislative bodies or government agencies
    • Rulemaking or public comment processes
    • Trade associations or coalitions
  • Experience with public policy issues related to artificial intelligence, algorithmic accountability, or digital consumer engagement.
  • Experience with nutrition, food policy or regulation is a plus.

Qualifications

  • J.D. and active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 3–7 years of legal experience, preferably with exposure to:
    • Legislative or regulatory work
    • Government, law firm, or in-house policy-facing roles
  • Strong analytical and writing skills, with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical guidance.

Salary Range

The expected salary range for this role is $167,366.00 - $209,207.00 per year.
