Department Overview

This opportunity is part of the Global Technology Infrastructure & Operations team (GTIO), where our mission is to deliver modern and relevant technology that supports the way McDonald’s works. We provide best-in-class foundational technology products and services including Restaurant Infrastructure, Global Networking, Cloud, End User Computing, and IT Service Management. It’s our goal to always provide an engaging, relevant, and simple experience for our customers.

The Infrastructure Engineer II role on the Global Restaurant Technology Platform (RTP) team is part of the Restaurant Infrastructure & Operations (RIO) Platform organization within GTIO. This role reports to the Senior Technical Platform Lead RTP and is responsible for infrastructure engineering, platform development, integration with Restaurant and Enterprise systems, and establishing engineering patterns, standards, and technical direction across the platform.

The RTP team owns the architecture, design, engineering, and lifecycle management of operating systems (OS), images, and supporting infrastructure that power more than 40,000 restaurants globally. This includes Windows Server and Client OS, virtual machines, configuration management, provisioning and imaging solutions, and infrastructure tooling.

This is primarily a bare-metal and server engineering role focused on physical servers, thin clients, and purpose-built restaurant technology. Responsibilities include setting up, provisioning, and imaging hardware, maintaining platform supportability at global scale, qualifying new solutions and hardware for deployment, automating operational processes through scripting, and diagnosing complex hardware, firmware, OS, and infrastructure issues that may not have documented vendor solutions. While Cloud and DevOps technologies are leveraged where appropriate, they are used to support the restaurant platform and infrastructure ecosystem rather than serving as the primary focus of this role.

The successful candidate will help shape the transformation of restaurant infrastructure and operations products and services across the McDonald’s environment by driving engineering best practices, modernizing platform capabilities, improving operational efficiency, and ensuring secure, scalable, and reliable technology solutions for restaurants around the world.

Duties

Basic Qualifications

  • Engineer, maintain, and modernize Windows operating systems, images, deployment solutions, and supporting infrastructure across a global restaurant fleet.
  • Own the lifecycle of restaurant compute platforms, including hardware qualification in partnership with Hardware Solutions team, provisioning, imaging, firmware, configuration management, and supportability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware, firmware, operating system, and platform issues, creating standards and documentation to improve future supportability.
  • Design, development, deploy, and support automation, scripting, tooling, and platform solutions that improve reliability, security, scalability, performance, and operational efficiency.
  • Evaluate platform architecture, configurations, application stack, and operational performance to identify risks, optimization opportunities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Partner with global, segment, and market teams to design solutions that meet business requirements while taking into consideration local hardware, network, and regulatory needs.
  • Influence platform architecture, engineering standards, and global restaurant technology practices to ensure consistency, scalability, and long-term maintainability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Restaurant Systems Management, Restaurant Asset Management, Hardware Solutions and Lifecycle Management, Global Cyber Security, and Global Infrastructure and core business Application teams, to align platform strategy and roadmap priorities.
  • Mentor team members, share technical expertise, and help strengthen engineering capabilities across the RTP and broader RIO organization.
  • Champion security best practices and develop automated solutions that reduce risk and remediate vulnerabilities across the restaurant fleet.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Windows OS engineering depth: Demonstrated experience building and maintaining Windows Server and Client images at scale: modular image design, automated deployment, driver injection, and configuration baselines.
  • Bare-metal fluency: Hands-on experience provisioning and troubleshooting physical server and endpoint hardware: firmware and BIOS/UEFI configuration, out-of-band management (iDRAC, iLO, IPMI, Redfish, or equivalent), storage controllers and RAID, and network boot.
  • Root-cause diagnosis without a runbook: Experience isolating hardware, firmware, OS, and application layer failures in situations where documentation is absent, incomplete, or inaccurate – including intermittent failures reproducible only at Enterprise fleet scale.
  • Automation: Proficiency in PowerShell, plus either Bash or Python, applied to real operational problems. Expected to describe something you have automated, why it was worth automating, and what it broke the first time it was used.
  • Fleet management tooling: Experience operating an endpoint or server management platform – Tanium, Intune, SCCM/MECM, Ansible, or equivalent – including patching, compliance reporting, and remote remediation.
  • Version control practices: Working knowledge of Git-based workflows: branching, pull requests, and code review as a routine part of engineering work.
  • Communication under technical ambiguity: Ability to explain a technical finding, its confidence level, and its business consequence to non-technical stakeholders without either overstating certainty or hiding behind jargon.

Experience: 3+ years in server, endpoint, or infrastructure engineering. Equivalent demonstrated capability is acceptable in place of formal experience (including self-directed work, home lab or personal infrastructure projects that can be fully described).

Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with restaurant, retail, industrial, or other edge / IoT compute environments.
  • Familiarity with Linux server or client administration.
  • Experience with .NET or C# in a tooling or automation context.
  • Working knowledge of one major cloud provider (GCP, AWS, or Azure) sufficient to integrate on-premises systems with cloud services in a secure and cost-effective manner.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability platforms (New Relic or equivalent) and with building operational dashboards and KPIs.
  • Experience migrating from Windows to OS agnostic tooling.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or equivalent) applied to infrastructure or image build processes.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and configuration-as-code patterns.
  • Experience supporting infrastructure across multiple markets or regions with differing standards.
  • Experience with virtualization and containerization.
